Updating the Magic Server Version (Magic xpa 4.x)

In a RIA deployment environment, the Magic server version and the RIA client version should match. There are some scenarios, such as in hot fix versions in which newer clients can be used with an older server version. Although it works, it is advised to update the clients and the server so they will be based on the same version. In some cases, such as in minor and major version changes, due to internal changes in the communication protocol, it is not possible to use different client and server versions.

When using ClickOnce for deployment, you should update the deployment package (using the Rich Client Deployment Builder) after updating your Magic server version. This will update your clients’ versions once they start the application.

If you are not using ClickOnce, it is recommended to maintain two Magic xpa servers – one for the old version and one for the new version. Each version will have its own entry URL including a different requester alias. In this case, older clients will still connect to the old server and new clients will connect to the new server. In the older version, you can update the application to show a message instructing the users to install an updated version. This is mostly required for mobile clients, in which you do not have control over the client version.
