Export/Import - Utilities (Magic xpa 3.x)
The Magic xpa Export/Import utility provides a convenient way to move or convert project components.
To perform an export/import operation, select Export/Import (Ctrl+Shift+E) from the File menu.
The options available include:
-
Porting: you can export project components across physical sites and platforms, in order to import to another Magic xpa project.
-
Exporting and re-importing the same project in order to reorganize the project file. This operation creates a new project file.
The Import utility imports project components that have been exported using the Export utility. After the import operation, the imported components are appended to the relevant repositories. For example, if you imported a data source named Customers, the data source will appear at the end of the current project's Data repository. Or, if you imported a program named Customer list, the program will be appended to the Program repository.
Using the export/import combination, you can copy either parts of a project or the entire project across other Magic xpa projects or various computer sites.
The Export/Import dialog box contains the following properties:
Operation
The available options are: Export and Import.
The property defaults to Export if the utility is activated for the first time. In subsequent cases, it defaults to the operation last performed.
Export
Exports project elements.
Import
Imports project objects that were exported via Magic xpa.
Note:
If you import your project and get an error stating that the CALL-MODAL is an unexpected token, just delete that text from the input file.
Type
This property is only available for the Export operation. From the Type list you select the project element you wish to export. The following are the available Export options:
Entire Project: Exports the entire project.
Models: Exports an element from the Model repository.
Data Sources: Exports an element from the Data repository.
Programs: Exports an element from the Program repository.
Help Screens: Exports an element from the Help Screens repository.
Rights: Exports an element from the Rights repository.
Menus: Exports the application menus designed as context or pulldown menus.
Components: Exports components from the Composite Resource Repository (CRR). .NET aliases are only exported in a full project export. When exporting only a range of components, .NET component aliases are not exported.
Application Properties: Exports the properties from the Application Properties dialog box.
Note:
Ensure that you import complete components, to maintain internal cross-references. Magic xpa will maintain references between repositories and within repositories, as long as the import is performed in one session. If the Program repository is split into two or more parts, only the first part imported will maintain cross-references between programs. Importing programs to an existing project may also cause loss of internal cross-references.

Export with Models
This property is displayed when you select the Export operation with the Type field set to Models, Data Sources, Programs, or Help Screens. When the check box is selected, Magic xpa exports your object models with the project. If you do not select the check box, Magic xpa will export the project without your object models, and the object will either point to an equivalent model on the end user's computer or will use the project's default system model.
Folders
Exported repository entries will always be exported with their folders. The exported document will include the folder name.
You can import a folder structure by selecting the Import Folder Information check box in the Export/Import dialog box. If the folder already exists, the imported entry appears as the last entry entered in the folder.
If you do not select the Import Folder Information check box, the imported object is created in the Magic xpa Imported folder.
From - To
If you are exporting models, data sources, programs, help screens or components you can indicate a range to export one of the items, a selection or the whole list.
For example, if you want to export the first three data sources (those appearing on the first three lines of the Data repository), indicate From 1 and To 3.
You can zoom from either of the Range fields to open a selection list for the element you choose for the Type property.
File Name
The name of the file to be used for the Export or Import operation.
If Magic xpa cannot successfully complete the Import operation because of an error in the file, a File Import Error Message will be displayed. This message gives information about the specific line in the file where the error was located.
